The North Toronto CI school community marked Remembrance Day in a moving ceremony on Friday, November 10. This annual service is sponsored by the Foundation, which was recognized in the program, and Advisory Board chair Ron Wakelin was honoured to participate by reading In Flanders Fields.
The assembly featured a music video and introduced war vets, including Lt. Cl. Michael Clarry, ’82, and Cpt. John Stevens, ’84, who also gave a heartfelt talk. The choir performed, and there was a recession led by a bag piper. It was clear from the respect and atmosphere in the auditorium that the students were deeply affected.
“I left feeling proud and touched by our school and grateful that we can contribute to this tradition,” said Wakelin.
The Remembrance Day ceremony was one of eight groups/activities that received funding from the Foundation this fall. Seven others were funded after the Foundation’s Dragons’ Den event on October 25. Held twice a year, the Dragons’ Den is an opportunity for student groups to request funds to support their activities. Financial requests are welcomed from all student-led groups that support the arts, athletics, or student well-being.
Eight groups presented this year, including the planning committee for Remembrance Day. All showed passion for their cause, and in addition to sponsoring Remembrance Day, the Foundation was able to contribute a total of $3000 to all seven of them: The Black Students Association, Drama Club, Graffiti, Music Council, PALS, Robotics Team, and NT Website Team.
