The surgical team behind this remarkable achievement\u00a0was led by NT alumnus Dr. Shaf Keshavjee.<\/p>\n<p>R<a href=\"http:\/\/ntci.on.ca\/foundation\/wp2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Shaf-Keshavee-NT-79.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-585 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/ntci.on.ca\/foundation\/wp2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Shaf-Keshavee-NT-79.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a>ecognized as a world leader in thoracic surgery, Dr.\u00a0Keshavjee graduated from University of Toronto\u2019s Faculty of\u00a0Medicine in 1985, then trained in surgery at U of T, Harvard,\u00a0and the University of London. A key member of the Division of\u00a0Thoracic Surgery at University Health Network, Dr. Keshavjee is\u00a0also an Officer of the Order of Canada (2014) and the developer\u00a0of the Toronto XVIVO Lung Perfusion System, which allows\u00a0donor lungs to be kept alive outside of the body in order to be\u00a0assessed, treated and repaired before being transplanted into\u00a0a patient.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to Dr. Keshavjee and his team on their lifesaving\u00a0innovations and remarkable achievements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In January 2017, all media outlets were buzzing with the inspirational story of double lung transplant recipient Melissa\u00a0Benoit.
