{"id":1016,"date":"2018-10-01T21:00:52","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T01:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ntci.on.ca\/foundation\/?p=1016"},"modified":"2018-10-01T22:01:07","modified_gmt":"2018-10-02T02:01:07","slug":"richard-van-praagh-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ntci.on.ca\/foundation\/richard-van-praagh-47\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard Van Praagh (\u201947)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This past summer, Ron Wakelin, Co-chair of the North Toronto Foundation, received a delightful letter from Dr. Richard Van Praagh (\u201947), Harvard Professor Emeritus, Harvard Medical School that was written on letterhead from Boston Children\u2019s Hospital. The following excerpts are from Dr. Van Praagh\u2019s correspondence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I graduated from NTCI in 1947 (I\u2019m 88 now). I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine. I graduated in 1954 with an MD degree. Then followed 10 years of postgraduate wor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k. I fell in love with pediatrics and then with pediatric cardiology\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 10 years of postgraduate work, [in October 1965] I was invited to join the staff of Boston Children\u2019s Hospital where I have worked ever since as a pediatric cardiologist, pathologist and embryologist. I have written more than 310 scientific papers, published a video series, edited a book on congenital-heart disease and have just finished writing a medical book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Diagnostic and Surgical Pathology of Congenital Heart Disease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I have also written a book for the general, non-medical reader, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survival: A New Approach from the Life Sciences to the Major Problem of Our Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returning to NTCI, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to NTCI for the excellence of its teaching. I remember Betty Bealey (English), Hal Brown (Athletics), Bob Gladish (Athletics) and \u201cBud\u201d Page (Latin).
