The Co-operative Experience
Co-operative education is a program that integrates
academic study and classroom theory with practical experience
in the workplace. Students are placed in supervised training
positions with organizations whose field of endeavour is
related to their area of study.
The aim of the program, which is built on a partnership
between educators and business and industry, is to provide
students with training and work experience that will enable
them to make informed decisions about their future education
and careers. The Co-operative experience will help students
make the transition from school to the world of work.
North Toronto is non-semestered. Co-op students work from
October - May.
They work for one or two credits. One credit is 110 hours,
approximately five hours per week. Two credits is 220 hours,
approximately eight hours per week. There is flexibility with
student work hours to accommodate employer and student
commitments. The Ministry of Education covers Workers'
Compensation and students work on a voluntary basis, sometimes
recovering travel expenses.
Employer's Input
- one employee to supervise the training of the student in
a variety of tasks related to the in-school subject
- develop training plan with the student's co-op teacher
indicating what the student might be able to do
- assessment of the student's peformance three times per
year (approximately fifteen minutes per assessment)
North Toronto Co-op Department is always looking for good
placements. If you can help us, please call Mrs. Oolup at
