The world is filled with technology. This can be viewed as good, but can be just as bad, because sure technology is useful,
but it is also quite easy to exploit and use for negative purposes.
There are many unethical uses of computers that will be shown on this site. The main 3 that are being exploited right now, are financial theft,
identity theft, and ransomware attacks.
Ransomware Attacks
A ransomware attack occurs when a type of malicious software threatens to release a victims private data, or block access to the data until a certain ransom is paid.
There are only a few things you can do regarding ransomware, which are if you believe that you might have opened something malicious, turn off your wifi straight away and hope that the malware did not encrypt all of your files, or you can backup all of your data so that whichever files were taken for ransom.
You should also make sure to have an anti-virus software installed and updated, as that may be your last line of defense against a malicious download.
Identity Theft
This occurs when someone else hacks into something like a social media account
for example, or personal/private records, and uses the knowledge or account gained to pretend
to be you essentially. As of now, there are many safeguards preventing identity theft,
which include a variety of different personal verification techniques such as;
> Most websites have ways of tracking your login locations, and if you login from a different location than usual, they will email you and require verification for you to proceed
> Many websites along with a variety of email sites also have something called "2 factor authentication", which basically requires an extra method other than your password to login, whether it be just a basic 6-digit
code sent to your cell phone, or your birthday
> Also most popular websites have intensive security systems preventing people from even hacking into your accounts or personal/private records
Financial Theft
This is the theft of things such as bank accounts, credit cards, and really anything money-related. Financial theft is probably one of the easiest things to prevent on this list, as it has the strongest security revolving around it, and is not very easy to get away with. Most banks / credit card companies keep an eye on your account,
and record regular spending patterns, different spending locations, and anything that might tip them off if your information has been stolen. That being said, if you're someone who only spends $100 per week on food in Canada, and all of a sudden, out of the blue, you begin spending $10000 per week on food in Brazil, they will be able to pick up on it fairly quickly.
If they believe that your money is being stolen, they will often freeze all funds on the credit card / bank account temporarily until they verify that it was you making the purchases. They verify that you made the purchases often by phone call, but sometimes require you to come to the bank in person and explain the purchases.
Overall Analysis
Overall, there is an expanding field that relies upon the unethical uses of computers.
This expanding field is increasing at a rate faster than people can come up with preventative safeguards,
which is why soon, technology will become a larger issue around the world. As more uses for it
are being discovered, and more people are using it for negative purposes, soon enough the
safeguards being created will be so far behind that creating them will be pointless.
Questions:
1. How can these "hackers" get access over my computer?
2. How safe is the average computer with average safeguards?
