A mobile computing device is a device that is designed to be moved from one place to another. It includes a display and keyboard. The first portable computing device was sold in 1975 and it was 50 pounds.
Over the years they have gotten lighter and now are very useful. (1)
History The history of portable devices is surprisingly not that long. The first one was made only 45 years ago, it was named the SCAMP.
It was a prototype of the first single computer. Next, is the IBM 5100, it was the first commercial device to go out.
After, the release of these devices, they started to get better with the osborne 1, kaypro and compaq portable.
They were all small computers that were a lot more technologically advanced than the ones before them.
After this came the Macintosh, which is now the leader in portable devices. (2) |
The effects of portable computing devices are both positive and negative. Portable devices have taken over our lives, everything we do relates to some sort of portable computing device. They can not be avoided, and with advancements in technology in todays world none of these devices cannot be avoided. Now that everything is online are lives have been consumed is this for the better or for the worse?
Negatives of portbale devicesWith all these positives about portable computing devices also comes with some negatives. Since these devices have such a huge impact on our lives and they are so accesible. This means that we are on them all the time, when a person is on any electronic device for too long it will affect their eyes badly. Staring at a phone for hours on a daily basis can lead to eye strain and eye health issues. This is often called Computer vision syndrome, the effcets of this are blurred vision, sore eyes and headaches (4). The phone produces blue light which can permanently damage your eyes. Blue light has two main negative effects, first is the blue light causes damage in your eyes. The average person is on there phone for about 3 and half hours a day. With people on there phones so much this blue is destroying everyone's eyes, also it causes drowsiness, difficulty concentrating and depression. Next, is the average person sits in a office for hours a day on their computer. Sitting down for this long staring at a computer screen can lead to addiction and not getting enough exercise. Too much screen time can lead to poor physical health, it has been proven by many tests, kids now are bigger than ever due to screens. (5). |
Overall phones have good and bad to them. They have changed the way we live and function as a society. First, they have made things easier in our lives and more accesible. Next, is negatives, there are many bad things that come with portable computing devices like destruction to eyes and bad posture. They have come a long way from the start of computing devices. As people we do need portable devices, they help us preform tasks much easier and make our lives better overall. They do destroy our eyes though, we need a healthy balance between phone time and off phone time. To keep our eyes in check and our mental health in check we need a balance. This is what is best for our safety.
