There are many things concerning privacy online

Everywhere you click online leaves a trail, these trails leave data that can interest businesses for marketing. How comfortable are you with having people follow your trail?

When doing anything online, always make sure to check

  1. Who is collecting the information?
  2. Is it necessary to give away the information?
  3. What is going to happen with your information?
  4. Are there any consequences?
Without these precautions people are vulnerable to online scams that try to get your personal information such as, bank account details, credit card, and fraud.

Leaking information through email is even a possibility. Phishing is a scam where an email scam hides behind a website which is designed to look legitimate, such as banks or charities.

Aside from steering clear of fake emails, and worrying about whom is gathering your information , it's important to understand that sometimes you don't get to choose who gathers your information. While you are surfing any webpage, you may notice that advertisements you have seen on other pages seem to follow you. As you browse the web for a minute or an hour adverts will stay the same from one website to another because you're being virtually tracked. Some places like the European Union are required to update users that cookies are being used to follow you "for marketing reasons". This warning is usually in fine print at the bottom of the screen. Online Privacy Scandals

Many online scandals have occurred, and have been uncovered now that people are becoming more and more careful with their online presence. Sony was caught installing hidden software on CD's that sent the computer's IP address back to Sony, once the CD was played on a PC.

Apps and Privacy

Social media has taken over people's phones being a main source of news and entertainment. These apps are strangely enough a privacy concern to some people, once you accept the terms and services you have allowed the app to access many things you may not be aware of. (4)

Instagram which is used by millions of people worldwide has also experienced some privacy concerns when it came to a San Francisco marketing agency called HY3PR which collected information from users including there photos, account bios, and locations to create a database of user profiles. People often agree to privacy settings and warnings without really reading them which allows this to happen. (5)

Snapchat which is also a very popular source of social media has been exposed for many privacy issues. Snapchat employees have abused their access to your data. Did you know that snapchat sees everything? The employees accessed users saved videos, locations, and email/phone numbers. Employees use an application to access your saved videos, who you last talked to, location, and your memories. (6)
