Smartphones: Touchscreen smartphones have been around for most of the 21st Century and show no signs of slowing down they make life extremely more efficient by being mobile enough to be carried around in someone's pocket. Some of the features that make smartphones so unique is the ability to communicate with an other phone user with a few swipes of your fingers, smartphones can also be used for entertainment purposes. Another attribute that makes smartphones unique is their ability to be used for educational purposes such as finding credible information as faster than ever before. While being very beneficial in our daily lives they do have their negative side as well. An obvious negative effect of owning a smartphone is that it is very expensive to begin with, and with companies inventing / designing new smartphone technology everyday a technically new device can be seen as old in 1-2 years down the road. For this reason they are not viewed as long term investments. Another negative point to owning a smartphone is that it is highly addictive, nearly 78 percent of teens get on their phone at least once every hour every day which leads to teens being distracted from schoolwork. Perhaps the biggest negative effect of owning these devices that we know of today is the health risks associated with lack of sleep, of c ourse due to the fact that smartphones are a relatively new technology we still don't know that the long term negative effects will be.
GPS: Touchscreen GPS's ( Global Positioning System ) have revolutionized the way people travel. It used to be a challenge for people to get from one place to another, and maps were not always up to date. With the emergence of GPS's you can now get directions to anywhere around the world with a few swipes of you fingers. It is difficult to find a negative point for GPS's since it is a device that has a specific function and doesn't require a lot of screen time but as said before everything has a down side and GPS's are no different. The single negative point to GPS's is the privacy issue for tracking people down, or more specifically the lack of privacy. This can easily be done by placing the device in the victims car (the person is a victim because it's against the law to be unknowingly tracked down) and being able to know were he/she is.
Laptops: Laptops are essentially the same device as desktop computers are without all the cables attached to it. They are extremely more mobile than computers are by weighing as little as 1.5 kilos. Laptops have been proven to boost workspace efficiency and can also be used for educational and entertaining purposes. Although laptops seem to have only improved our lives by giving us fast access to useful information in a time where time is of the essence , they too also have a negative side. Health issues are the biggest problem of extended laptop use, there are countless side-effects from heart disease, to spine and nerve injuries. They are also as addictive as smartphones are as 65 percent of teens spend more that 6 hours on laptop devices every day.
