Adaptive technology and program to improve computer accessibility

What are adaptive technologies?

There are Assistive and Adaptive technology and they are both used to help people with disabilities to be able access modern technologies just as if they were normal people. Adaptive technology is a small part of assistive technology, it is specifically designed for people with disabilities, specifically with physical disabilities like visually impaired, deaf, and sensory impaired. What are some programs?

Screen magnifier

(2)
Many people already heard of this but screen magnifiers are used to zoom in and focus on a specific point the user chose. It makes reading articles and words on a screen much easier for people with disabilities and sometimes it even helps people without disabilities.

Touchscreen

Touchscreen is a display that can recognize human touch or sometimes even a stylus works too. Most of our devices like phones and touchscreen computers are used in our daily life. There are many different types of touch screens: (t3)
  1. Resistive touch screen: pressure sensitive
  2. Capacitive: more durable but only detect devices that are grounded
  3. Infrared: a pretty popular one, can detect both finger and stylus
  4. Surface acoustic wave (SAW): much more advanced but is expensive and not well supported

How it helps blind or visually impaired

Bigger monitors, larger buttons
Very accessible to commands (t5)

Voice recoginition

(3)
Voice recognition is also known as speech recognition, it is a virtual helper that is used every often in recent times.(t6)
For example Siri is a form of voice recognition in modern times.
Google developed personalized voice recognition, it records the user's voice and adapt to a more accurate understanding in the system. It helps people who struggle to write, type, or use commands with current technologies, it allows them to just speak into the technology and it will do what it is told to do. It makes it easier to access commands they didn't know how to before. There's product for visually impaired so instead of them finding the buttons and command, they can simply just call out what they want. Simply put, it is almost as if there's a real life person helping you with your needs and difficulties with technology.
