Redevelopment of NTCI site Meeting - postponed to Nov 27
October 9, 2003

As you are no doubt aware... an exciting redevelopment is being planned for North Toronto Collegiate. A very important information session on the project will be held in the school auditorium on November 5, 2003 (originally scheduled for October 14) at 7:00. We will be sending you more information about this session closer to the date. We hope that a large number of parents will be able to attend this meeting.

The following is an update on the project from Trustee Shelley Laskin (Ward 11).

Update:
North Toronto Collegiate Institute Redevelopment Project
September 2003

Plans are moving forward for the rebuilding of North Toronto Collegiate Institute. The excellent tradition of the last 91 years will continue in the existing building through the construction phase which is to begin with the shovel in the ground in the spring of 2006, with completion scheduled in 2007-2008 academic year.

On June 12, 2003, the North Toronto Collegiate Institute Site Redevelopment Design Team unanimously approved the land use concept for the proposed redevelopment of the NTCI site. Design Team members included students, teachers, support staff, school administrators, alumni representatives from the North Toronto Collegiate Institute Foundation and ratepayer representatives along with Board staff, and the architects hired for this first phase of the projects Teeple Architects Inc. with Crange and Boake Architects.

Four partners will potentially be involved including North Toronto Collegiate Institute (TDSB), a co-terminus school board, the Toronto Parking Authority and, an as yet unnamed, developer.

The approved land use study would result in a regulation size football field and track connecting Roehampton Avenue through to Broadway Avenue, two standalone school facilities and three slender residential point towers at the edges of the property.

The dimensions, floor plate and heights of the residential towers are to be determined. However, residential development is expected to be in the order of 2.5 to 2.8 times residential coverage resulting in building heights ranging from 24 to 30 stories. Facility staff have met with Councillor Michael Walker to ensure he has been fully briefed and acted on his suggestions, and they continue to meet with the Toronto Parking Authority.

Discussions with City Planning staff have begun. The project is proceeding as planned. Next major steps will be preparation of a Request for Proposal, selection of a development partner and finalizing negotiations with the Toronto Parking Authority.

The approved land use planning study will be presented at a community meeting on November 5 scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at North Toronto Collegiate Institute. Details will follow.
