Loss of senior football team 'shameful', says trustee
Inside Toronto - Toronto,Ontario,Canada
BY NORM NELSON The North Toronto Collegiate senior football team will
likely not take to the field this fall, all for want of a single teacher to
volunteer. ...
Comment by Mark Kinoshita: If you look around the NT web site, you will see all the activities that are coached and advised by teachers at North Toronto. Our new VP said that she was extremely impressed by the number of sports offered by a school this size.
It is easy to ask for a "single teacher to volunteer", but football is not an easy sport to coach. It takes a teacher with an interest in the sport. It is a larger team than most sports with a huge amount of equipment. It is a more dangerous sport with more risk and responsibility for any coach/staff supervisor. There are no lack of volunteer coaches, but the staff advisor/coach must take responsibility for the volunteer coaches. The lack of field at North Toronto during our construction also means that there is a 10 minute walk to and from the local park. In case of an emergency, I would hate to be the only staff member present at practice. I have watched the football team practice in the past - they start everyday immediately afterschool and go until after 5pm when I left - they are watching game footage at lunch - they are in the weight room before school. Is this a volunteer position for a "single teacher" ?
The school's athletic program has been underfire lately - they fought to get a pool in the new building and failed (there is a link ready to go in the plans if a pool were to be built)- they fought to retain a proper floor for the new gym and are still trying to get artificial turf for the new field - they are battling the City to keep their promise to use the local park for gym programs and practices - they battled to keep the pool for our swim team and gym programs and now are puzzled by the unstaffed (thus unusable) but heated pool - they have increased enrollment in gym classes but decreasing facilities and fewer teachers (in the boys program, where four sat, now sit two).
Today our trustee, Josh Matlow, came to our department heads meeting to apolgize and set the record straight regarding the misquotes in the Toronto Star. In this Inside Toronto piece, Josh is allowed to explain the misquotation and put it all in context. It is also of note that there have been very few complaints from the actual team. Principal Gorenkoff stated that there had been no complaints directed to him from the team or parents.
